Dr. Laurence B. Mussio

Dr. Mussio has an established reputation as one of Canada's premier historians of business and enterprise. He has kept current by constantly researching and presenting findings at international scholarly conferences -- in addition to his consulting work in the private sector. 

His focus was originally on government regulation and political economy in telecoms and high technology with his study Telecom Nation: Telecommunications, Computers and Governments in Canada.  Published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 2001, Telecom Nation focuses on how governments and regulatory agencies handled the communications revolution in the three critical decades after the Second World War.

The study of political economy and regulation led him to the history of  enterprise. He is the author of  Sun Ascendant: A History of Sun Life of Canada.  Published by McGill-Queen’s University Press Sun Ascendant is a work of independent scholarship that examines the extraordinary history of one of Canada's most prominent financial institutions.  The book introduces a fresh perspective on issues such as regulation, foreign ownership, social insurance, and national unity across the span of over a century.  Sun Ascendant has been called the “best history of a Canadian financial institution written to date … a major contribution to business history, both in this country and internationally.”

In 2005, Dr. Mussio published a popular history of Bell Canada entitled, Becoming Bell: The Remarkable Story of A Canadian Enterprise and Bell D’Hier à Demain: La Grande Histoire d’une Entreprise CanadienneWritten to be accessible and engaging while telling an important story, this history of Bell which reached over 75,000 people and was widely praised as a model of its genre.      

In the last number of years, Dr. Mussio's professional interests in the history of enterprise have focused on the banking and financial services sector. He is currently leading a major research project on Bank of Montreal, Canada's first bank. The project will produce two volumes under his authorship: a scholarly history of the Bank, and a celebratory volume, both of which will be published by Canada's premier university press, the McGill-Queen's University Press.
